![]() See: "Hide everything you don't want to lose" procedures. When one approaches upon an inhabited system, all hyperspatial relays, networks, stations, ships, and activities are retracted until it passes. We can 'track' them by their 'burrowing' activity, as they cleave new paths between destinations in the void between stars, or clash with each other. We believe they created many of the starlanes and labyrinths we know, and are responsible for at least some of the changes we record in them, but there may be further, unexplained phenomena at work. We avoid their gaze, and call them Labyrinth Entities, for the labyrinths are truly theirs. When their attention turns to us even briefly we feel it as the scorn of wrathful gods. As it is, they keep their own numbers down, they are easy enough to track and avoid, and they are seldom interested in us except as curiosities. Were they not so busy stalking each other, we would be doomed trespassers living on borrowed time while we scrabble across even the easiest hyperlanes. In hyperspace it is fertile ground for them. In many ways it is more hospitable to life, but that is not useful where we are concerned. We encourage you to describe it in a way that appeals to you as a species, referencing your mythology, nature, or technology as you please.Īt first glance hyperspace is just as uninhabited as our own space. We are also partial to calling it a jungle. We prefer labyrinth, as it conveys the ability to get lost, trapped, or endangered in ways that those other analogies sometimes fail to do so. As you can imagine, there are labyrinths within labyrinths! Other species refer to the labyrinths as a network, as an ocean of rivers, as the tangled roots or branches of a galactic tree, and so forth. A labyrinth is a network of starlanes that is mostly well connected - you can usually find 'fast' routes to other stars within that labyrinth once it has been charted. ![]() They may also loop back around or play worse tricks, like sending a traveler into the future or shunting them into the corona of a star. Charting these starlanes accurately is work unto itself, as they shift and change sometimes. Mix-ups in this space will cause your craft to scatter into hundreds of pieces over painful distances, combust, or warp into hopeless chunks of random material like sand, hair, or actual cheese. ![]() You can read the swirling patterns and threads of shimmering exotic energy as possible pathways of near instantaneous movement, sometimes over vast reaches of space to destinations that stretch between distant locations. What we sense beyond our craft in that realm is a delirious re-imagining of our own galaxy, rebuilt at fundamental levels. Small, connected follow up to the previous, Meet the Rylenth which also explores an important element of the wider setting! I thought, what would this vision of humanity tell first contacts about hyperspace? and wrote this.
